The Christogram IHS, which is known in Christianity of Western Europe since the 7th century, consists of the first three letters of the Greek name of Jesus (Ιησοῦς), iota-eta-sigma, or ΙΗΣ. However, the illiterate ordinary people of that time did not know anything about Greek, so they interpreted these letters as "In His Service", or among the more educated Latin speaking people "Jesus Hominum Salvator" (Jesus, saviour of men).
Particulary in the Alpine regions this motif was found in almost every household on bread basket napkins, home altar cloths etc., mostly executed in cross stitch.
